This is an extremely busy time of year for us here in Devon, especially with the Summer holidays about to swing into action with the children breaking up shortly – hopefully the weather is going to make an improvement!
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has called for independent retailers and distributors to have a more structured and sustained programme of support and investment, as more and more businesses appear to be leaving the recession.
This move has been pushed by the BRC after “Independent’s Day” on the 4th July where shoppers were actively encouraged to visit independent traders as much as possible for their retail requirements – especially on-line traders.
The BRC was pleased with this campaign but still believes more needs to be done to boost the Independent retail sector. The director-general of the BRC, Stephen Robertson said the following:
“Independent shops are a vital part of UK retailing and town centres benefit from a good mix of unique businesses alongside recognisable big names. Given the right conditions, independents and multiples can both thrive.”

We feel it is extremely vital for these independent retailers to thrive during a recession, as more value and choice can be offered to the consumers who may grow tired of the usual “multiple” chain stores.
