15% rise retail administrations down to online shopping

With the recent demise of “Game” on the high street, the latest popular retailer to go into Administration, it is clear that shoppers are abandoning the high street stores for their internet rivals, which is helping a 15 percent rise in retail administrations for the first quarter of 2012.

Deloitte, the accountancy firm said that 69 retailers had collapsed, up from 60 in the same period the previous year, as the squeeze on consumer spending increased and on-line retailers with their low overheads offer better deals.

The retail collapses were responsible for up to 10,000 job losses, and further shows the delicate nature of retail at the moment.
